As the end of my second year at university was approaching, I decided to apply for an internship in order to gain experience and pursue my interest. I found out about Coderus through the University of Essex Internships, one of the schemes available at my university and decided to apply, as I believed the company represents the perfect environment to gain a good insight into what working within a professional software team meant while gaining new skills. As I am a very curious person, I have found this position suited me well, as not only have I encountered many interesting challenges, it has also allowed me to discover Ipswich, another town from my travelling list.
Throughout the duration of my placement, I have had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of commercial projects while understanding the diversity of software testing tools and hardware used. One of my main interests in this position was learning about automated testing, which has led to building my knowledge about the different software available and how it can be best used to improve the efficiency and accuracy of testing.
Everyone on the team has been supportive when both I and the other summer intern have found ourselves stuck with questions. They have not only given us plenty of details each time, but also encouraged us to keep asking questions, do exploratory testing and try and think like the user when testing a product. Working together on a project with the other intern gave me the chance to see that we were able to carry out more thorough testing and reduce the risk of missing something.
At Coderus I have understood how important the entire experience has been for me, and I can now assess my best skills in a much better way and use them to start building my future career. I will also use the skills that I’ve learned in automated testing for my future projects. Overall, it was a very positive experience.
