new starter blog

Say Hello to our New Starters, Kara, Luke and Haydn!

June has been full of surprises so far with the introduction of three new Coderus team members, Kara, Luke and Haydn! We have begun the summer months in style by hiring fresh talent and investing in young, passionate individuals wanting to go on an exciting new journey with us. Even in the middle of a global pandemic, we have been able to source talent at both a graduate level and senior level, to further expand and grow the Coderus team.

Our new starters have joined our in-house development and marketing teams, to oversee various client-focused projects, transform our business strategy and work with a range of emerging technologies that integrate with embedded devices.

We have caught up with them to see what they have been up to since starting their new roles, how they have been adapting to life at Coderus and what they enjoy doing in their spare time including any projects they are working on.

Senior Marketing Consultant

Role

The purpose of my role at Coderus is to help transform the company’s business strategy in order to increase brand awareness and organic visibility in order to drive leads.

What have you been up to so far since starting your role?

Although I’ll be working with a variety of channels across the company, I’ll primarily be managing the CSR, PR and SEO strategies. I started working at Coderus last week and I’m really loving it. Mark and Nick have given me a lot of creative freedom regarding strategy and have been really supportive of the stuff I have already started proposing and currently I’m working on creating templates for our marketing processes and documentation as well as working with the rest of the marketing team to create user personas, goals and brand guidelines for the company. This is to ensure that we are starting our overall business and marketing strategies with a strong foundation.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time, Kara?

In my spare time, I have quite a few hobbies. When I’m just looking to chill out I enjoy watching films and shows – particularly those with complex stories or layered characters because as someone who studied psychology, I like to attempt to predict plots and behaviours. If I’m feeling a bit creative, I make jewellery, design clothing and paint. My favourite hobbies though are boxing and pole fitness, although both have been difficult to do in lockdown.

What made you decide that Coderus was the place for you?

I wanted to work for Coderus for a few reasons. I’ve known Mark, the CEO, for over a year and really admire who he is as a person and his involvement in the local community as well as his investment in young people is really inspirational to me. For me, I also wanted to work somewhere that had values that aligned with my own personal values and Coderus’ core values really resonated with me. However, more importantly, I was able to actively see these being upheld and that was crucial when I decided to make the move to Coderus.

Apprentice iOS Developer

Role

Working as an Apprentice on the iOS Development team, I am involved in the quality, performance and reliability of iOS applications that integrate with embedded devices and supporting sprint planning and sprint reviews on a fortnightly basis.

What have you been up to so far since starting your role?

I’ve really enjoyed my time working here. Joining as an apprentice developer, I was worried I would have so many questions and be unsure of what to do at times. Everyone has been incredibly helpful with any queries I have and I’ve just learned so much already, even without starting my degree yet! I’ve been working on a range of development tasks, working on different topics and with different technologies.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time, Luke?

Even though I spend all week programming, I still enjoy working on some side projects in my spare time. I’ve recently started a blog, documenting things I’ve learned and hopefully sharing my knowledge with others. I also enjoy cycling, playing the trumpet and spending time outdoors with my dog.

What made you decide that Coderus was the place for you?

The opportunity just arrived at the perfect time. Due to Covid-19, my A-Levels had been cancelled and I wasn’t exactly sure what was happening with university choices. Coderus reached out and I realised it was exactly what I wanted. My dream job, plus studying for a degree at the same time. I really liked how Coderus was so local yet exactly what I was looking for as a career.

Junior Android Developer

Role

Developing new features and fixing bugs in the Android Development Team and liaising with other Departments including UX/UI, QA & Embedded teams.

What have you been up to so far since starting your role?

I’ve found my time here so far very enjoyable. Everyone has been really welcoming which has helped me to settle in easily, despite working remotely! I’ve been working on the various parts of the B&W headphones Android application.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time, Haydn?

In my spare time I enjoy watching films and TV shows, as well as sports (mainly football). I like a broad range of films and shows but my favourite genres are probably sci-fi and thrillers. I am also currently making a start on a personal project to create a film tracking app so that I can keep track of new films that I watch in an app.

What made you decide that Coderus was the place for you?

I wanted to work for Coderus as it seemed a nice company to work for that values their staff and allows them to extend their current skill set and constantly learn new things.
