Coderus – Meet & Greet at University of Suffolk

June 20, 2018

At Coderus, we’ve always valued the input from graduates and the excellent balance they add to our team. As part of our ongoing dedication to nurturing bright minds, we hosted a free Meet and Greet – With Pizza! event at the University of Suffolk. The event, held on campus at the Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre, was a relaxed affair, helping students to discover what a career in tech is really like.

Lina, herself a University of Essex graduate (and now an employee at Coderus), explains more.

When it comes to the world of work, students have so many opportunities – the challenge is knowing in which direction to go. Sometimes all that’s needed is a great conversation, with someone who is passionate about their topic – and even better if pizza is involved!

That’s why we are delighted to collaborate with the University of Suffolk on our Meet & Greet – With Pizza! initiative. With the University providing the essential educational background and Coderus all the technical knowledge and experience, students have the opportunity to gain insightful information – and ask questions about what life in a software development company is really like. (Games nights, free coffee and geek speak to name a few!)

Our first session took place at the Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre – a fantastic modern venue. During the session, we met a really enthusiastic bunch of students, all keen to take advantage of their future peers’ knowledge and career advice. Coderus doesn’t just take on graduates: it also offers a structured intern programme, enabling many more students to engage with the world of software development while studying – and be an active part of the tech community, too.

While the University does all the hard work to provide students with theoretical knowledge, Coderus actively tries to engage with the local community by regularly organising tech and networking events.

Last year, at Coderus’s annual Google I/O Live Stream event, we met Ben, who was studying Computer Games Programming at the University of Suffolk and was interested in software development. He joined the growing team of Coderus as a summer intern and by the completion of his studies he got offered a full-time position as a software developer.

Although fast-paced, the working environment is very relaxed and the team incredibly welcoming and happy to answer any questions I had. During my internship with Coderus I gained invaluable experience and was able to use my educational background from University to the ‘real world’.

Amy Carpenter, Employability and Progression Adviser, agrees.

For me, learning where you can go, and what opportunities there are, is a very important part of study. By holding these events, we truly open our students’ eyes, boost their confidence, and provide direction about what they can achieve.
